In a changing and challenging operational environment, how do you sustain lasting improvements in engagement?
Karian and Box has conducted annual engagement research for BP since 2008. Far from remaining static, the nature of BP’s challenge has varied during our long-term relationship with them. During that time, there have also been events that have changed the nature of that challenge almost overnight, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.
In a long-term engagement relationship like this, sustaining continuous improvements in employee engagement requires strategic understanding, constant innovation and robust delivery of high-quality insight. But most of all, it requires a true partnership approach.
First we tackled the logistical challenge of surveying, analysis and reporting for a truly global, multilingual operational organisation. Our insight work covered all of BP's global offshore and refinery operations, as well as its Group functions, surveying 80,000 employees in 15 languages. This research involved reporting at the Group and divisional level, together with individual business area reports, all of which combined pioneering data visualisation with incisive commentary and clear, actionable recommendations.
An innovative online action-planning tool has helped leaders and managers across BP to respond to their survey results, involving their teams in developing solutions to engagement challenges from a library of best-practice actions. Supporting BP to connect insight with action-planning through digital tools has helped secure improvements in engagement across the business.
